An account of an Antarctic Peninsula study tour - an adventure realised by Victoria University.

To step off the very tip of Argentina, a group of forty-six travellers led by geologists Professor Peter Barrett and Dan Zwartz will cross the Drake Passsage to voyage around the islands scattered at the tail of the Peninsula that curves towards South America like a scythe. This blog will offer daily insights into life on and off the Professor Molchanov, descriptions of wildlife and wonders encountered, and knowledge gained throughout this once-in-a-lifetime expedition.

A nice glass of wine at the End of the World

USHUAIA IS A FRONTIER TOWN that grew from a penal colony to a city that caters to Antarctic tourism.
Once home to the hardest of men and a handful of women who opted for a new life as prisoners and settlers at the foot of the jagged Monte Martial, Ushuaia (oosh-wya) is a breath of fresh glacial air after the grime of Buenos Aires.
It´s the southernmost city in the world, and there are t-shirts proclaiming ´El Fin del Mondo´ (the End of the World) should you lose your bearings. It´s also a very nice place to enjoy fresh crabs, scallops, and Argentinian wine.
By breakfast tomorrow morning the Professor Molchanov will be waiting for us in a harbour as still as the Drake Passage - all 800km of it - is tulmultuous.

In the photo, my room-mate and new friend Tricia Walbridge - Victoria University Foundation Director.

HI,

Have a wonderful trip. I will be following your adventure with great interest.

My dad Barry Doyle has been wanting to do a trip like this for 50 years.
He was telling me last week how he helped get ready the ship Sir Hillary set out on 50 years ago, and that he despartely tried to get aboard.

Tell Peter to bring him back safely, and not to let him take over the lectures!!!!

Tell Barry that Ciaran and Isla already miss him and that they would like a photo of Sanat's elfs or Rudolph the reindeer.
Thanks Tara

Thanks Tara

Best wishes as you navigate the Drake passage. This is a trip I hope to do myself someday, but in the meantime I am enjoying 'travelling' it through your blog.
Please give my warm regards to Alan Graham (and Liz) and tell him I hope his Sealegs etc are either working or are not needed.
